Granville died on October 11, 1988, of lung cancer at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 65. She was buried at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.
In February 1947, Granville married Jack Wrather, who had two children, Molly and Jack III, from his previous marriage to Molly O'Daniel. Granville and Wrather's daughter, Linda, was born in 1949, and their son, Christopher, was born in 1952.
In 1938, she was cast as Nancy Drew to lead a series of B-films similar to Warners' popular Torchy Blane series. She appeared in four Nancy Drew films, before Warner Bros. made the decision to stop producing B-film series.
The films, all of which starred Bonita Granville as the teenage sleuth, were released by Warner Bros. in 1938 and 1939. Also appearing in the entire series were Frankie Thomas as Nancy's neighbor and boyfriend, and John Litel as her lawyer father, Carson Drew.
