It ran for 21 years until 4 November 2003. It was produced by Mersey Television and conceived by Grange Hill and Hollyoaks creator Phil Redmond. Brookside was Channel 4's highest rated programme from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, with audiences regularly in excess of seven million.
Affectionately known as 'Brookie,' the soap was based in Liverpool and first hit our screens on November 2, 1982. With exciting storylines that had the ratings soaring, Brookside saw its residents murdered, taken hostage and buried under the patio.
Brookside had its fair share of memorable storylines in its 2,915-episode run, many of which included the Grant family, consisting of mum and dad Bobby and Sheila, daughter Karen and sons Barry and Damon.
The series began on the launch night of Channel 4 on 2 November 1982 and ran for 21 years until 4 November 2003. Its cast included Dean Sullivan, Alex Fletcher, Anna Friel, Paul Usher, Sue Johnston, Claire Sweeney, Ricky Tomlinson, Ray Quinn and others.
Brookside creator Phil Redmond said: Everything comes down to the fact that Channel 4 changed - and Brookside didn't fit the mix. It happens. Life must move on and we have all come to terms with that. He added he was particularly pleased that the programme is ending on such a strong year.
